Regular physical activity does more than build muscle or help manage weight. It strengthens your heart, improves circulation, supports healthy blood pressure, helps regulate blood sugar and can even improve your mood and sleep. And you don't need an expensive gym membership or an intense workout routine to benefit.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each week, along with muscle-strengthening activities at least two days a week. That might sound like a lot, but it's easier than you think.
• Walk more. A brisk 30-minute walk five days a week can help you reach your aerobic activity goal.
• Build strength. Push-ups, squats, resistance bands and weight training help maintain healthy muscles and bones.
• Find something you enjoy. Basketball, cycling, hiking, dancing and recreational sports all count as physical activity.
• Take breaks from sitting. If you spend hours studying, gaming or working at a desk, get up and move regularly.
• Start where you are. You don't have to be in great shape to begin. Gradually increase your activity as your fitness improves.
Your 20s are a great time to establish those habits. The sooner you start, the more opportunities you'll have to benefit from them.
